The phase-coherence problem is a major issue that must always be resolved when manipulating an STFT time-frequency representation (STFT representation). Using analysis windows (window functions) overlapping along the time axis causes individual signal components (sinusoids, impulses) to spread across multiple frames and STFT frequency bins (in frequency, this corresponds to “spectral leakage”). The temporal overlap of window functions is based on the fact that adjacent STFT (short-time Fourier transform) analysis results are strongly correlated (a sinusoidal component present in the analysis frame at time t is likely to continue similarly in subsequent frames). All modifications made to an STFT representation must maintain “appropriate correlations” with adjacent frequency bins (vertical coherence) and time frames (horizontal coherence). This relates to the problem of signal transformation by the phase vocoder. Except when the synthesized sound is extremely simple, maintaining these “appropriate correlations” accurately is difficult. Since the invention of the phase vocoder, research has mainly sought algorithms that preserve vertical/horizontal coherence after modifications to the STFT representation. Amplitude coherence is only a minor problem for time-scale manipulation, since shifting analysis frames in time has only a small effect on amplitude. The problem of phase coherence, however, required consideration over a considerably longer period before suitable solutions were obtained.
