Syrinx is an attendant of the goddess Artemis in Greek mythology. Pursued by Pan, the half-beast god with a goat's lower body, Syrinx flees to the River Ladon. At the moment Pan embraces her to capture her, the river nymphs, at Syrinx's plea, transform her into reeds on the riverbank. Mourning her, Pan makes a flute from the sounding reeds and names it Syrinx.
