Tacit knowledge, proposed in the 1950s by Hungary’s Michael Polanyi, means knowledge that cannot be explained, or is difficult to explain, through language, numbers, diagrams, and so on. For example, useful workplace tips not written in manuals but which improve efficiency when known, or effective know-how possessed by outstanding personnel, qualify as tacit knowledge.
