A phoneme, in linguistics and phonology, is a phonological unit felt by native speakers to be the same as a psychological reality regardless of phonetic differences, and the smallest speech unit serving to distinguish meaning.
[Linguistics] Phoneme ◆ The smallest unit composing the sounds of a word needed to distinguish it from other words. For example, English tap and map are distinguished by t and m, each a phoneme.
