In real analysis, the exponential function expₐ with base a maps a real number x to the real number aˣ. This is meaningful as a real function only when a is a strictly positive real number. It extends the function defined on the natural numbers mapping n to aⁿ to a domain of all real numbers. It can therefore be viewed as a continuous version of a geometric sequence.
