Equal temperament is a tuning system dividing an interval such as 1 octave into equal frequency ratios. Many types have been devised. Twelve-tone equal temperament, used in Western music, is well-known. Music commonly performed today has intervals dividing 1 octave (logarithmically) into 12 equal parts (with frequency doubling after 12 intervals); this is called 12-tone equal temperament.
