A chromatic scale consists entirely of semitone intervals between adjacent notes. There is only one chromatic scale within twelve-tone equal temperament. Originally, it is a scale incorporating chromatically altered notes of a diatonic scale, resulting in its constituent pitches being arranged at semitone intervals.
