Grid world is a concept used in computer science and artificial intelligence (AI). A grid world represents an environment of square cells called a grid arranged in a fixed configuration. In a 1-dimensional grid world, cells form a single row along a straight line. Each cell represents a particular location and is uniquely identified by it. A 1-dimensional grid world is a very simple environment used mainly as a testbed for reinforcement learning and optimization algorithms. An actor called an Agent aims to achieve a goal while moving within the grid world and receiving rewards on cells. For example, the objective is to reach a particular cell in a 1-dimensional grid world, and the agent learns how to achieve it by choosing its actions. The agent decides actions considering its current position and rewards, aiming to find an optimal strategy. A 1-dimensional grid world is extremely simple, making problems easy to analyze and helping understand and evaluate algorithms. The concept may also be extended to more complex 2- or 3-dimensional grid worlds.
