An iwakura means, in Shinto, a rock upon which a deity descends from heaven. It generally refers to a boulder, though sizes range from large to small. Shinto originally had no shrine buildings; its primitive form is said to have involved placing sacred shimenawa ropes around large rocks deep in the mountains, making them iwakura to welcome deities.
