A phase transition is a change from one phase of a system to another, also often called a phase transformation. In thermodynamics or statistical mechanics, a phase is defined as a set of stable states of a system with certain characteristics. Generally understood as mutual changes between states of matter, the term also applies to changes in properties within matter of the same phase and changes of ground state.
