Echelon is a communications interception system built primarily by the United States for military purposes. The European Union and others have indicated that it is operated mainly by that country's National Security Agency, and Edward Snowden's revelations showed that even wired data communications are intercepted through PRISM, although the US federal government has never acknowledged it.
