Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR): A technology carried on satellites observing Earth's surface from space. It directs microwaves, a type of electromagnetic wave, at the surface and receives their reflections to examine terrain. Unlike optical satellites photographing the surface with cameras, it offers the advantage of observation unaffected by weather and possible even at night.
