When a speaker or similar device vibrates a flat surface such as metal, plastic, glass, or plastic wrap stretched tightly over a bowl, changing the pitch produces, at resonant frequencies, strongly vibrating areas and nonvibrating areas that form nodes. Sprinkling particles such as salt or sand onto it makes geometric patterns visible as particles bounced away by the vibrations gather at the nodes.
