An almond-shaped cluster of neurons deep within the medial temporal lobe of higher vertebrates, including humans. It has been shown to play a major role in processing and remembering emotional reactions and is considered part of the limbic system. Also called the amygdaloid nucleus (Japanese reading: hentokaku). Location of the amygdala in the human brain.
