“Kotohogu” means blessing through words, expressing joy, or stating celebratory words. It arose from “koto-hoku,” blessing with words, and is still sometimes written with characters meaning “word” and “blessing.” “Hoku (hogu)” means chanting words of blessing so that good results will follow.
