“Forget yourself and devote yourself to others”—this is precisely the human way of life Buddhism considers ideal. Buddhist scriptures include a story collection called the Jataka. Many stories concern Shakyamuni practicing as a bodhisattva seeking enlightenment in previous lives. One particularly famous story concerns Shakyamuni and a starving tiger.
