It has a shape very similar to the Japanese koto (so), but while the koto is played with finger picks, the gayageum is played without picks, using the 3 fingers of the right hand: thumb, index, and middle finger. Sound can also be produced by pressing a string with a fingertip and releasing it. The left hand can shake the strings to create fluctuations in sound.
A Korean instrument.
