Art Deco followed Art Nouveau as a style popular in Europe and America in the early 20th century (1910–1930s). Whereas Art Nouveau featured natural motifs such as flowers and plants and free curves, Art Deco is characterized by straight lines and geometric patterns. Compared with the elegant, highly decorative Art Nouveau, Art Deco is modern and functional.
