Humanists (Japanese pronunciation: jinbun shugisha) were intellectuals during the Renaissance who considered the nature of God and humanity through studies of Greek and Roman classical literature and the original texts of the Bible. Because the influence of French figures active in the 15th–16th centuries was particularly great, they are also sometimes called “humaniste” in Japan using the French term unchanged.
