A fill-in (Fill-In, meaning “to fill”) is a performance technique chiefly for drum sets (broadly including accompaniment on guitar, piano, and so forth). It refers to adding variety through improvised playing at the end of a repeated pattern or in the 1–2 bars connecting sections of a piece. In Japan, it is called okazu (a side dish) because it serves as a kind of seasoning for the music.
