Describes changes in the world system as a combination of A. reciprocity, B. redistribution, and C. commodity exchange, showing a path toward a mode of exchange D beyond them. Chapters proceed through mini-world systems, world=empire, world=economy (the modern world system), and the present and future. Mode of exchange D is held to have been revealed by prophets of universal religions. Considering Max Weber's classification of prophets into ethical and exemplary prophets, it argues that not only the founders of Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism, but also Ionian natural philosophers and thinkers such as Socrates, Confucius, and Laozi are equivalent to prophets of universal religions.
