Schoenberg was the teacher, and Berg and Webern his pupils. They pioneered atonal music and twelve-tone technique and are of paramount importance to the period and stylistic categories called contemporary music in classical music. Occupying the most avant-garde position in the musical world of the time, they also had connections with artist Wassily Kandinsky and philosophical thinker Theodor Adorno.
