Kirikane, also called hosogane, is a traditional technique expressing patterns by heating several sheets of gold, silver, or platinum foil together, cutting them into thin straight strips, and applying them with a brush and adhesive. Patterns made singly or in combination from thin linear kirikane, cut foil in triangles, diamonds, circles, and other shapes, and cut-out designs formed by cutting foil into shapes are called kirikane patterns.
