He taught that relationships bound by profit cannot be trusted, saying, “The friendship of noble people is as plain as water; the friendship of petty people is as sweet as sweet rice wine” (worthy people have straightforward relationships like water, while others associate only in pursuit of benefits like the sweetness of amazake).
「君子の交わりは淡きこと水のごとく、小人の交わりは甘きこと 醴 あまざけ のごとし(立派な人物は水のようにさっぱりした付き合いをするが、そうでない人物は、甘酒のようなうまみを求めてしか付き合わない)」と言って、利益で結びついた関係は信頼がおけないことを教えたのでした。
