German goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg is called the father of modern printing. Around 1450, he developed movable type and invented letterpress printing using it; the many books circulated satisfied people’s desire for knowledge and disseminated information, greatly contributing to the Renaissance, Reformation, and emergence of early modern society in Europe.
