A human brain organoid is three-dimensional brain tissue with structures resembling those in a living organism, induced to differentiate from pluripotent stem cells (ES or iPS cells). Whether a human brain organoid is judged conscious depends on which of the many theories of consciousness is adopted, but because consciousness is a subjective phenomenon, experimentally verifying which theory is correct is difficult.
