A branch of mechanics, considered part of continuum mechanics. Its subfields broadly divide into fluid statics, which treats states at rest, and fluid dynamics, which treats motion. (In Japan, however, some people do not clearly distinguish the 2.) In engineering, it is sometimes divided into hydraulics, dealing with water, and aerodynamics, dealing with air. Fluid mechanics also treats only electrically neutral, nonionized fluids; partly or fully ionized fluids are treated in plasma physics or magnetohydrodynamics. However, some aspects remain essentially identical to fluids, such as Rayleigh-Taylor instability without magnetic fields.
