Mathura (alternate Japanese pronunciation: Matūra) lies south of Delhi on the western bank of the middle reaches of the Yamuna, a tributary of the Ganges. An ancient religious city, it was known even in Rome as a “city of gods.” Buddhist sculpture began in Mathura at the same time as in Gandhara, and because it was not influenced by Hellenism, unlike Gandhara sculpture, a theory holds that Buddhist sculpture originated independently in India, opposing the Gandhara-origin theory.
