Noun (aufheben originally means “pick up,” “preserve,” “stop,” or “discard”). A basic dialectical concept. Including the three senses of “negating,” “elevating,” and “preserving,” it takes contradictions and oppositions concerning things to a higher Unifying at the next stage. Sublation (shiyo). The Japanese translation of aufheben is “shiyo” (sublation), read shiyo. It is a philosophical term for temporarily suspending a conflict of ideas, retaining some elements of each, and raising them to a higher dimension to form a single new concept. Another Japanese translation is “yoki.”
