Soetsu Yanagi founded Japan’s Mingei movement. He was also a Shirakaba literary figure and a thinker who firmly criticized Japanese colonial policy following the annexation of Korea (1910). In 1926/4, he issued “The Purpose of Establishing the Japan Folk Crafts Museum”; 10 years later, in 1936/10, the Japan Folk Crafts Museum was completed in Meguro, Tokyo, and Soetsu became its first director.
