Because its color is translucent rather than pure white like shell white, it is used not as white paint but mixed with other pigments or applied thinly to a substrate like an effect pigment to create sparkle. Its other effects are diverse, and it is said to have been used for electrical insulation, heat-resistant materials, and, in ancient times, Chinese medicines and insect repellents.
