The Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) is an atmospheric fluctuation in which enormous cloud clusters spanning thousands of km move eastward from the tropical Indian Ocean to the Pacific at about 5m/s. In the tropics, active-convection periods when cloud clusters pass alternate with inactive periods without them, and their effects extend to Japan's weather.
