Endosymbiotic theory is a hypothesis explaining the origin of eukaryotes. It holds that eukaryotic organelles, particularly mitochondria and chloroplasts, originated in aerobic bacteria and cyanobacteria living in intracellular symbiosis. In 1883, French botanist Andreas Schimper proposed the concept of symbiosis between 2 organisms in relation to chloroplast origins.
