A religious practitioner who directly contacts and communicates with gods and spirits to perform oracles, prophecies, healing, and other activities is called a shaman, and beliefs centered on shamans are called shamanism. There are 2 forms through which shamans contact and communicate with gods and spirits: “possession” (Japanese reading: hyoi) and “ecstasy” (Japanese reading: datsukon).
