From the early modern period onward, it came to be widely regarded as a spider-shaped yokai. In antiquity, the Yamato kingship regarded the Tsuchigumo as alien peoples; “Nihon Shoki” and regional fudoki portray them as fierce beings with “the nature of wolves and the disposition of owls,” dwelling in rock caves (iwamuro), earthen caves, and fortifications built in mountains and fields, refusing imperial orders and being exterminated. #word
