1941 Borges has a short story called “The Library of Babel.” In it, he likens the universe to an infinitely expanding library. Like a honeycomb, hexagonal reading rooms are stacked far above, below, and to each side, in a library whose exit can never be found. The librarians settle there and spend their entire lives there.
