The original meaning of kashiori is the “outer box” for sweets. In the past, when sweets were considered luxury items, they were sold packed in boxes. The name “kashiori” comes from these boxes being called “oribako” (folded boxes). Today it refers generally to gift sweets in outer boxes and has come to be used as a gift expressing thanks, apology, or greetings.
