Self-organized criticality explains general laws of diverse, complex dynamic phenomena, from nonequilibrium scenarios to earthquake probabilities and forest-fire spread. This organizing principle adjusts systems to steady states independent of initial conditions, with slight perturbations alone producing critical responses.
