1927: Al Jolson
The first work marking the transition from silent films to talkies. Its first-ever line in film history, “You ain't heard nothing yet!” is extraordinarily famous. Jakie, a Jew and the son of a chief priest, dreamed of becoming a jazz singer rather than succeeding his father. He is disowned after being discovered singing in a tavern.
