The rebec is one of the string instruments that preceded today's violin. It is generally thought to derive from the Arab instrument rabab, and has a pear-shaped appearance. It probably spread to Europe via Spain in the middle of the Middle Ages. Also called rabeika. Rebecs of the 16th–17th centuries had no frets and 2–3 strings tuned in 5ths.
