Derived from French “mot = word.” Originally medieval unaccompanied polyphonic choral music with biblical words as lyrics. From the late Baroque onward, however, it came to mean short polyphonic religious choral pieces exemplified by Bach.
フランス語「mot(モ)=言葉」に由来。 元来は聖書の言葉を歌詞とする中世の無伴奏多声部合唱曲。 ただしバロック後期以降は、バッハに代表される、ポリフォニーによる短い宗教的合唱曲を指すようになった。
