Charles Darwin (1809-1882) wrote that the ability to produce and enjoy music "must be ranked amongst the most mysterious with which he is endowed". Darwin was a biologist who is best known for his theory of evolution by natural selection. He also proposed a theory that music evolved through sexual selection, and that the voice was originally used as a mating call.
