A canon is a piece in which multiple voices begin and perform the same melody at different times. It is a typical form of polyphony. Usually translated as a round, but whereas a round successively repeats exactly the same melody, canons include ones beginning on different notes. They also include special forms in which the rhythm is doubled or appears reversed vertically or horizontally.
