Cologne, Germany has broadcast orchestras and choirs active in radio, television, concerts, CD production, and other settings. WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne A broadcast orchestra belonging to Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), known as one of Europe's important radio symphony orchestras. Founded in 1947 with the opening of Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk, it was formerly called the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra. WDR Radio Choir Cologne As the “voice” of the WDR Symphony Orchestra and WDR Radio Orchestra, it works in radio, television, studios, concerts, CD production, and other settings. Cologne electronic music studio Stockhausen, returning from Paris in 1953, became its 2nd director, and it became known as a sacred site of electronic music. It focused on developing electronic instruments such as the monochord and recording and editing equipment, greatly influencing electronic-music facilities around the world.
