Contralto has the following meanings. The lowest female vocal range, or alto A large viola invented by France’s Vuillaume in 1885. Contralto derives from Italian “contralto,” meaning “corresponding to alto.” Originally it meant a vocal range corresponding to “alto,” which denoted the highest male register.
