The glymphatic system is a recently discovered waste clearance system in the central nervous system of vertebrates, acting as a "pseudo-lymphatic" system for the brain. It facilitates the removal of metabolic waste products and other substances from the brain's interstitial fluid, primarily during sleep. This system is crucial for maintaining brain health and its dysfunction is implicated in neurodegenerative diseases. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-07132-6 https://scrapbox.io/files/68513c3c17dabf4ce423d7e9.jpeg https://scrapbox.io/files/68524c67e21648d7aaea1267.jpeg A hydrophobic peptide accumulating in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. A hydrophobic peptide accumulating in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. Measuring blood concentrations requires high sensitivity. Dementia patients in Japan are estimated at over 6 million, approximately 24 million worldwide, and projected to reach 80 million in 2040. Studies using mouse models showed that stimulation with 40Hz light or sound promotes clearance of amyloid-β from the brain. This stimulation is thought to activate the brain’s glymphatic system (its waste-disposal system) and promote amyloid-β clearance. 40Hz stimulation is also expected to reduce brain atrophy due to Alzheimer’s disease and prevent cellular damage.
