The Eleusinian Mysteries were the greatest mystery religion, worshipping the agricultural goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone, practiced for approximately 2000 years at Eleusis in ancient Greece. With themes of death and rebirth, these rites promised initiates a happy afterlife. Their precise content remains mysterious because secrecy was strictly maintained, but they were revered as the holiest rites in classical antiquity.
