From Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture. In 1935, theoretically predicted the existence of mesons mediating the strong interaction that binds protons and neutrons together inside atomic nuclei. British physicist Cecil Powell’s discovery of pions in cosmic rays in 1947 proved Yukawa’s theory correct, leading him to become the first Japanese Nobel Prize recipient in 1949 (Showa 24).
