The heart, which pumps blood within the body, contracts about 100,000 times per day, with its movements controlled by electrical signals. Signals are emitted by tissue called the sinus node, about 5–10mm in size (also called pacemaker cells), and travel through the heart's electrical wiring, called the conduction system, from the atria to the ventricles.
