Futurist musical practice began with the “Manifesto of Futurist Musicians” issued on 1910/10/11 by Francesco Balilla Pratella (1880–1955). Disgusted with Italy’s musical situation at the time, Pratella attacked academicism and rejected Italian opera. His musical position was as follows.
“To feel and sing with a spirit open toward the future, drawing inspiration and beauty from nature through every human and superhuman phenomenon within it, liberating individual musical sensibility from every imitation and influence of the past. To celebrate humanity as a symbol perpetually renewed by the various aspects of modern life and the permanence of its new relationship with nature.”
